National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was founded in 1901 and is now part of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

NIST is a physical sciences laboratory, and a non-regulatory agency. Its mission is to promote innovation and industrial competitiveness. NIST activities are organized into laboratory programs that include nanoscale science and technology, engineering, information technology, neutron research, material measurement, and physical measurement.

NIST SP 800-145 is a Special Publication, defining Cloud Computing, its characteristics , service models and deployment models.
